While not particularly eventful, last weekend was an exhausting weekend. These girls can wear me out and some Monday’s a day at the office feels like a day off … but they also crack me up, bring more joy to my life than I could ever even have imagined and are the best things that ever happened to me!
Saturday was fun. In the morning we ran errands together and then Lexi had her second haircut. Randall and Kenzie dropped Lexi and I off and went home to put away the groceries. I wasn’t sure how Lexi would do given that she was not at all excited by her first hair cut. She was a total pro!
It could not have been more polar opposite from her first haircut. This time she happily played with the toys while she waited and then when it was her turn she confidently marched over and chose to sit on the elephant seat. She sat still and did exactly as she was told throughout the whole haircut. She was quite serious … and also a bit proud. My big little girl!
The girls have been very into “swimming” recently. Whenever they spot their bathing suits they insist on putting them on and we have been “swimming” in our big bathtub a couple of times lately.
On Saturday afternoon we decided to take them to the indoor pool at our gym for family swim time. They had a blast! As soon as we hit the water they were giggling. They have no fear. They will jump into the pool, don’t mind going underwater (esp. Kenzie), and were little fish in the pool. It was amazing to me, especially in contrast to some of the other kids at the pool who were older and very fearful of getting into the water, let alone getting splashed with water or getting water in their face. I’m not sure where they got their love for water, since we really don’t take them swimming that often, but I think it is great. I am so happy that they have this confidence and that they have so much fun in the water. As we left the pool we said, “we need to start doing this every Saturday … what a great family activity that lets us all be active during the cold winter months.”
Then the next morning Lexi woke up screaming. She had an explosive diaper situation … beyond anything we have ever experienced with her. After getting her bathed and dressed we decided the best thing would be to snuggle in mommy & daddy’s bed. She was perfectly content laying next to her sissy, reading books … until she started screaming and writhing in pain. She lifted up her pajama top and pointed to her belly saying “hurts, hurts.” Poor baby … she must have picked up something at the pool, and dealt with terrible stomach cramps/diarreah all day. I hate not being able to take away her pain. Needless to say it was a very lazy (but not very relaxing) day (which was good because both girls also woke up with runny noses) … seems like we have had a lot of those in January. We read lots of books, got manis & pedis, "cooked" oatmeal for our baby dolls, and did lots of snuggling. Let’s hope we are healthier in February.
While we were home “sick” on Sunday, Kenzie kept us entertained with her silly antics. We’re not sure where it came from, but she has suddenly developed a thick Southern drawl (think Southern version of Brittany Spears fake British accent), most spectacularly showcased by her pronunciation of “Toooe-bay” (Tobi) and “bay-bay” (baby)…. Watch for yourself...
It is amazing how much Kenzie’s vocabulary has blossomed over the last month. She is saying almost as many words as Lexi is now. Lexi’s new favorite work of the moment is “mine!” She uses it often. As in “no, mine do it” if you try to help her put on her clothes when she is determined to do so on her own. “No, mine mommy!” when her sister tries to join us when we are reading a book together. “Mine toys!” ... “Mine, mine, mine!”
Oh the joys (& trials) of two almost 2 year olds :) It was a weekend of highs and lows. An exhausting weekend, but one that was filled with lots of little moments that make all of the hard work worthwhile.
