Their class celebrated with a picnic at Beech Acres Park. It was so fun to watch them run around the park with all of their friends and amazing to think about how much they have grown and learned over the past 9 months.
Kenzie & Lexi adore their teachers, Mrs. Berry and Mrs. Putman, and as they thanked them and hugged them I couldn't help but think of their first day of preschool back in September when they screamed for an hour after we dropped them off and Kenzie tried to bite Mrs. Berry. I can't thank them enough for the patience, love and support that they have given Lexi and Kenzie this school year. Thanks to them my girls have become more confident and social little girls. I also feel so lucky that the girls had such a great group of kids in their class. They have built some wonderful friendships and I hope that many of them will continue on together in the same 4 day class next year.

Mrs. Berry & Mrs. Putman made the most wonderful book for each child in their class. It included artwork and photgraphs from throughout the year, as well as a Preschool Interview ... Kenzie & Lexi's responses shown below.

We are celebrating the season with runs through the sprinkler, frequents trips to the park and visits to the farmers market.
Last weekend we visited Tobi at Lilian & John's house. The girls were so excited to go see Tobi and to meet Lilian & John's new puppy, Migo. They love their four legged brother so much and I don't think they stopped giggling the entire time we were there.

Randall and I were lucky enough to enjoy a date night with great friends and great food & wine at the new Boca downtown. It did not disappoint.

Kenzie has finally mastered the tricycle and now wants to pedal everywhere ... really fast!

A few days before my trip I started to prepare the girls for my departure. "I am going to fly to Germany to visit my dad, your Opa," I told the girls.
"Why are you going to visit Opa?" Kenzie asked.
"Because he is sick and I want to spend some time with him," I replied.
"Why is he sick?" questioned Kenzie.
"Because he choked sissy!" replied Lexi before I could speak, giving Kenzie her best all-knowing look.
"What do you mean he choked?" I questioned.
"Because YOU said he choked," she insisted.
I was puzzled and my lack of confirmation immediately made Lexi want it that much more. Then it hit me. Lexi had overheard me telling lots of people that my dad had had a stroke. But instead of stroke, Lexi understood choke ... since that is a word that she actually understands. After explaining to them in 3 year old terminology what a stroke is they both wanted to know why they couldn't come with me to visit Opa. I explained that it is a very long flight and that Opa was still very weak and wouldn't have much energy to play with them.
"But he will get better and then we will go visit him and he will play with us." Lexi said.
If you're reading this Dad, that's your motivation to keep working hard every day.
On Wednesday afternoon I departed Cincinnati. The plan was to meet up with Inken and Mom in Newark and then the 3 of us were to fly to Hamburg together. We were going to visit Dad and to be there for our cousin Caroline’s civil wedding ceremony. Unfortunately flight delays caused me to miss my flight in Newark by 5 minutes, I was rerouted through London, where I almost missed my connection again and finally arrived in Hamburg ... while my suitcase did not for another 48 hours. Not an ideal start to the trip but once I finally did arrive I was just happy to hug my mom and sister and to be surrounded by family that I hadn’t seen in many years.

Our first stop was to visit my Dad at his new nursing home. It was shocking when we first walked into the room, as he looked so gray and little laying in that hospital bed. I have never known my Dad not to have a tan and here he was so pale and appearing so much older than the last time I saw him. But his face completely lit up when he saw us. While his physical state shocked me in a negative way, his mental alertness and ability to converse with us in both German and English pleasantly surprised me. We visited Dad every day, taking him for walks in his wheelchair, sitting outside in the garden in the sun, showing him pictures and videos of his grandchildren. I honestly think our visit did wonders for him. He looked so much happier and stronger and a little color had even returned to his face. It was so hard to leave. I am afraid that without our daily encouragement to do his exercises … to practice swallowing so that he will hopefully no longer need a feeding tube, to massage his right hand often to promote bloodflow, to use the exercise ball to build up strength … that he will forget to do them or not be motivated to do them as often as he should. I pray that he finds the strength and motivation to keep going and working hard when we aren't physically there to encourage him. We did get him an iPad so that we can stay in better touch and send videos and pictures of Kenzie, Lexi and Grady (We had also hoped to be be able to facetime with him, but unfortunately the nursing home does not have wifi.). There are also apps designed especially for stroke victims to help rebuild fine and gross motor skills so we are hoping that those will also help him. My cousin is planning a big wedding celebration one year after her civil ceremony and we told Dad that we want him to be dancing by then. He has a lot of hard work ahead but I am hopeful.

Besides spending time with my dad at the home, I had the chance to relive parts of my childhood while in Germany. I spent most of my childhood summers on Fehmarn, and while I had been back a few times in the not too distant past when we lived in Geneva, it had been over 15 years since I had been there with my sister and over 25 years since my mom had been there. From competing to see who could yell “Ich seh die Bruke!” first as we approached the bridge to Fehmarn, to going to the grocery store to pick up a replacement toothbrush for me (since my suitcase did not arrive for over 48 hours) and returning with all of our favorite childhood treats – Frucht Zwerge, pudding cups topped with whipped cream, Balisto, Haribo Licorice, Ritter Sport Yogurt, to getting quark and “pommes mit mayo” down by the beach, to going shopping at Stolz in the “Stadt” they all brought back great memories.

My cousin Caroline was a gorgeous bride and the wedding was beautiful. It was intended to be just a civil ceremony followed by a small reception, but it was a great celebration. The weather was perfect and the reception was right on the beach. There was a delicious dinner with family that evening and of course the celebration continued late into the night (or early into the morning for some) at Mopsy's. We had a great time catching up with family and old friends.
I am so happy for Caroline & Moritz and was honored to be there for this special celebration. I hope that if we come back for the big celebration next year that Dad will be able to join us.
The other special part of the trip was catching up with cousins. I loved spending time with Wibke and her Paula who reminds me so much of Wibke at her age. We had so many fun times together when we were young and watching Paula and her friends reminded me so much of those days.
The other special part of the trip was getting to spend Mother's Day with my mom & sister. Inken and I got up early and walked to the bakery to pick up fresh "broetchen" for breakfast. After breakfast we visited the woman that my mom worked for as an au pair and "bar maid" when she spent the summer between her sophomore and junior year in College on Fehmarn. We got to hear some fun stories about my mom during that visit. Like the time that Helga's husband decided at midnight that my mom HAD to go to Oktoberfest. and they drove the 10 hours to Munich through the night with my dad and Mopsy (now the owner of Mopsy's). Then we went on a bike ride down to the beach and along the coastline. After visiting my dad that afternoon we had "kaffe und kuchen" at my cousin Birte's house and then dinner with Gert & Telsche in town. While Inken and I missed being with our babies on Mother's Day it was a great mother-daughter day.
It was a visit filled with mixed emotions. Highs and lows. Old & new. I am so thankful for everyone's hospitality during our visit and for all of the love and support that they provide my Dad while I can't be there in person.
The girls had their spring concert at school last Tuesday. They were very excited and had been practicing their songs at home leading up to the big event. When we arrived in the Little Theater at our church I was surprised at how large of a production this was. The stage was so nicely decorated with flowers the children had made and there were easily over 100 people in the audience. When the children marched onto the stage, Kenzie and Lexi were front and center.

They looked so cute in their new floral dresses. I could tell that they were a bit overwhelmed by the size of the crowd as they scanned the audience for a familiar face. When they started to sing Lexi immediately started singing and swaying and doing the hand motions. Kenzie stood tight lipped and still beside her, occasionally clapping. She was still a bit unsure and overwhelmed. Then she made eye contact with her Daddy and a huge smile spread across her face and she started to participate. She then pointed out to Lexi where we were sitting and they were both full of smiles. The whole production was really so cute and they girls did a great job, especially during Baby Beluga – their favorite song. The girls were so proud of themselves and so happy to see mommy, daddy and Sara after the show. We treated them to a special lunch at the Bonbonnerie to celebrate their first musical performance. What a special day!
Besides the rain that we had during the marathon the weather has actually been pretty nice and we have been enjoying the warmer temperatures and longer days by doing some gardening and going on walks each evening after dinner. Kenzie & Lexi’s destinations of choice are the new house, the park and our old street to visit Beau the cat :)
On Friday it was time to say goodbye to GiGi, Pop Pop, Granny Nanny and Rudy so that we could start the long journey back to Cincinnati. We decided to leave mid-day so that we could break the trip up into 2 days again. Our plan to wear the girls out that morning before getting into the car was successful and Kenzie was asleep within 5 minutes of being on the road. Lexi was awake but happily playing with her baby doll.

Since we weren’t in a rush we decided to stop in Hattiesburg, MS to have lunch at a restaurant that one of Randall’s friends from Southern Miss recently opened. The Depot was a fun coffee shop & bistro and we enjoyed some delicious sandwiches and soups. Randall got the chance to catch up with an old friend and it was a perfect lunch stop.
We were making pretty good time and the girls were being very good and then it started pouring down rain. Our plan was to make it to Franklin, TN before stopping for the night and the last 60 miles or so were slower going because of the rain. We checked into the hotel at around 10pm and the girls were very excited to be staying in a hotel again.

The next morning we had planned to check out historic Franklin in the daylight. While it was light, it was still raining hard. It happened to be Main Street Festival which would have been such a fun experience had we not been soaking wet. Due to the weather we really only checked out a couple of booths and one very cute home store before heading into Puckett’s Grocery for lunch (but really more to escape the rain and to dry off a bit). Lunch was yummy and the skillet chocolate chip cookie that we had for dessert was to die for.
After lunch we decided to get back on the road. It rained off and on, but we made it home by 6pm. The girls’ first request was to stop and check progress on the new house. The foundation and footer had been poured and the basement walls and rafters completed, so we were able to step foot into our new home for the first time. Kenzie & Lexi were so excited that they insisted on getting their babies from the car so that they could show them their new house.

While we had a great week away, it felt good to return home to Cincinnati.

Randall was in Florida for a sales conference so on the evening that I arrived we had a P&G dinner to attend. While a “work” dinner is not my top choice when on “vacation”, we did have a fun evening. The next day Randall had to work again, so I had a “no obligations” day. I slept in, went for a run, did a little shopping, met Randall for lunch, went and had my hair and makeup done at the P&G Innovation Studio, read. Not a bad day. The next day Randall was also on vacation and we enjoyed a relaxing day together. We had breakfast overlooking the ocean, relaxed by the pool, had lunch poolside, went to the spa, and then joined another couple for a fun and delicious dinner. The next morning we again enjoyed our beach breakfast, followed by a run on the beach, before we sadly had to pack up. On the bright side, we were looking forward to seeing our girls again.
When we got back to New Orleans on Wednesday evening the girls greeted us with huge smiles and bear hugs at the airport. The next day we all had some New Orleans style fun! We went down to the French Quarter and our first stop was Café Du Monde for beignets. Putting powdered sugar on our noses has become a tradition for our New Orleans visits. Next we walked around the quarter, stopping to say hi to the Blue Dog. We walked back around to Jackson Square and Kenzie insisted on taking a horse and carriage ride. The girls were excited to say hi to our horse (or technically mule) Cash, but Kenzie was sure not to turn her back to him as she did not want the “horsey to bite her butt.” This time both Kenzie & Lexi stayed awake for the entire carriage ride and we all learned a little something new from our great tour guide. Our next stop was for Po-Boys and a little local shopping. Once we returned home we went for a walk to the levee and along Lake Ponchatrain. A good, busy day.

We enjoyed one last morning in New Orleans before packing up for the long journey back home. The girls were sad to leave and GiGi and Pop Pop were sad to see them go. I think that even though the girls might have worn them out, that GiGi and Pop Pop thoroughly enjoyed their week with their granddaughters. And Randall and I were so grateful for the little break. Thank you Gail & Gene!

The plan was for the whole family to drive down so that Randall could compete in the half-ironman triathlon and then the girls could spend the week with GiGi and Pop Pop while Randall and I went on a trip (most likely out of the country) to celebrate his 40th birthday. Well, about 6 weeks before this planned trip Randall found out that he had to attend and present at a conference in West Palm Beach Florida the same weekend of the triathlon. Big bummer. At first we thought we would just postpone the entire trip, but GiGi had already declined to go on her 50th high school reunion cruise because she was planning to watch the girls that week, so we figured it wasn't right to diappoint her by not coming. So that meant that I would be embarking on an 800+ mile road trip solo with my girls. We started talking about it several weeks in advance. About how they would have to be very good so that mommy could drive safely. We purchased many items to keep them entertained, had snacks and drinks on hand and DVD's ready to be played. And last Friday afternoon Kenzie, Lexi and I embarked on our mommy-daughter road trip. The girls were very excited for the road trip itself and to go visit GiGi, Pop Pop and Rudy in New Orleans!

Before we even made it to Mt. Lookout Square Lexi asked "Mommy, are we almost in New Orleans?" Now for those of you who don't know, Mt. Lookout Square is less than a mile from our house. It was going to be a long trip. This is also the point where I realized that I forgot to give Kenzie Dramamine to prevent car-sickness. So less than 1 mile into our journey we had to detour to the CVS (which had about 10 elderly people in line all with 21 questions about their medication) to pick up some childrens Dramamine. 30 minutes later, Dramamine ingested, we were back on the road. Just in time to hit Cincinnati rush-hour traffic. It took us about 30 extra minutes to get past downtown and over the brige into Northern Kentucky. During these 30 minutes the girls asked at least 30 times if we were almost in New Orleans. It was going to be a very long trip indeed.

But thankfully things improved. Traffic strated moving and we made it 127 miles before we had to stop at a rest stop for a potty break and to get some quick exercise. After we got back in the car, both girls fell asleep for a while and we made good progress. After the girls woke up we played the cow spotting game. Basically you look for cows and when you see one you call out the color, "Black Cow! Brown Cow! White Cow! Spotted Cow!" This game kept them entertained until we were almost to Nashville. We passed through Nashville and I saw a sign for Franklin, TN. I had heard great things about Historic Franklin so that is where we decided to stop for dinner. Luckily the historic part of town was less than 3 miles from the highway and we quickly found our way there and to a parking spot. We walked down Main Street and looked in the windows of all of the cute shops. When I asked the girls what they would like for dinner they agreed on spaghetti and meatballs. So then we were on a hunt for an Italian restaurant. After consulting with some friendly locals we knew exactly where to go. We enjoyed a delicious meal including calamari for an appetizer ... also selected by the girls. It took a bit longer than a McDonald's roadside stop, but it was so much more enjoyable.

Then we were back on the road as I wanted to make it at least half-way before stopping for the night. The girls watched some Mickey Mouse, played for a bit with their baby dolls and then drifted off to sleep. We made it Cullman, AL before I started to get sleepy and we stopped for the night. Checking into the hotel solo with 2 sleeping girls proved a bit challenging. I carried my half-asleep girls inside and set them down on a couch in the lobby while I checked into a room. I then carried them back outside to get our bags - luckily we just had 1 small overnight bag, my laptop bag and their soft blankies to carry inside. We took our things up to our room and then had to come back downstairs to move the car - by now the girls were fully awake so I was worried that they would not want to go back to sleep. But they were very good girls and the 3 of us were soon fast asleep in a big king sized bed.

The next morning the girls were excited to be in a hotel. My 2 little monkeys spent some time jumping in the bed. Then they did some hallway laps before we went downstairs for breakfast. They thought it was pretty cool to be able to choose their own breakfast from the buffet. After we ate, the girls took their Dramamine and we loaded back into the car for the second half of our trip.

I was soon regretting the decision to stop the night before, wishing I had continued on while the girls were sleeping. This morning they were full of energy and not too happy to be back in the car. "I want to be at GiGi's house now!" "I don't feel good!" "Are we there yet?" "Why is it taking a too long time?" Then about 30 miles into the drive Kenzie said "Mommy, I realy don't feel good. I need my bucket." Uh oh, not a good sign. And sure enough a couple of minutes later she got sick in her bucket. Poor thing. So we got off at the next exit to get cleaned up. This is also when Lexi started complaining about a stomach ache. And for her it started coming out the other end. Fabulous. Over the course of the next 2 hours we stopped 4 times so that Lexi could use the potty. At one stop we went to the bathroom, got all strapped back into our carseats, pulled out of the gas station only for Lexi to say, "My belly hurts. I need to go to the potty again." So we pulled into the gas station next door, got unbuckled, went inside (thankfully to a much cleaner bathroom than the last).... rinse, repeat.

At one point Lexi said she had to go potty and we were literally in the middle-of-nowhere Mississippi. I promised her we would get off at the next exit, but when that finally came 10 miles later, there was NOTHING at the exit, so we pulled along the side of the road, got our froggy port-a-potty out of the back and Lexi happily relieved herself while sitting among the wildflowers. The girls actually thought this was hilarious and both Lexi and Kenzie took multiple turns sitting on the potty in the sunshine. I knew that potty would come in handy in case of emergency :)

Between potty stops, the girls colored, watched DVD's, asked me 1000 times, "Mommy, how do you get up there? how do you get down there? how do you get over there?" (This is their new thing, they are so curious about how the roads connect and how you get from the highway to the overpass, etc.) Eventually Lexi drifted off to sleep. Kenzie was still chattering away and was getting a bit whiny and mischevious. I was anxious to be done with the drive. Kenzie had a box of Goldfish crackers and a bottle of water in the back seat and started giggling. "Mommy, my fishies are swimming in the water! Mommy, I am getting wet. My shirt is all wet! Stop Mommy! I need a new shirt!" She had poured her water into her Goldfish box and it then leaked out all over her. "Honey, I can't stop right this minute," I said as I cruised down a hill and right past 3 police cars that had been hiding in a cutover in the median. "Shoot! How fast was I going? Oh no, that police officer is pulling out behind me. I must have been going too fast"
"What mommy? What is happening?!" Kezie yelled.
"Mommy is getting pulled over by a police officer."
"No Mommy! Keep going! I don't want to see the police officer!"
Of course I did not listen to Kenzie and pulled over. When the officer came to my window I pleaded with him, "Sorry officer. I am 750 miles into an 820 mile drive with my 3 year old twins and I just lost track of how fast I was going." Meanwhile Kenzie was screaming hysterically in the back seat. Lexi continued to sleep.
"License and registration," is all he said before walking back to his cruiser.
Whle he was in his cruiser Kenzie continued to scream and I tried to calm her down. Reasuring her that everything would be alright. The officer returned with my license and ticket in hand. "I wrote you a citation for going 88 in a 70. You have until June 13 to appear in the Pearl River courthouse or to pay your fine. Drive safely." Clearly he had no sympathy and did not undertand that girls just want to have fun. Big bummer. Mad mommy. Sad Kenzie.
We continued on our way, sure to keep to the speed limit. And while Kenzie had stopped crying, she was silent, terrified that the police officer would stop us again. She eventually fell asleep... exhausted from the whole episode.

Those last 70 miles into New Orleans seemed to last forever. At least the girls both snoozed until we were about 15 miles from GiGi and Pop Pop's house. So when they awoke and asked "are we almost there yet?" I could actually say, "Yes we are. We will be there in 10 minutes!"

"Yippee!" they cheered. We were all excited to pull into GiGi and Pop Pop's driveway. We had survived and even enjoyed (for the most part) our girls road trip! I was very proud of my girls for being such good little travelers.

His mom was still in town so the girls and I enjoyed a nice weekend with GiGi. On Saturday the girls were all out of sorts. They were moody, they were dramatic, they were letting mommy know that they were not happy that she had been gone & that daddy was now gone. It was an exhausting day. So on Saturday night when we went to bed we talked about Sunday being a new day. A happy day. So on Sunday morning we woke up and got ready to go to the zoo. It just so happened that George & Skylar were also planning to go to the zoo, so we met up and enjoyed a great morning at the zoo together. We followed up our zoo visit with lunch together at LaRosa's. It was a wonderful day!
On Wednesday the girls had a field trip to Gorman Heritage Farm. It stormed heavily the night before and I wasn't sure if the excursion would still be on, but the rain stopped just before we were scheduled to start and so we headed out to the farm in our rainboots and rain jackets. The girls had a blast with the little friends. I love these rare chances to get a glimpse into their school lives. Watching them interact with their teachers and their friends. It is amazing how far they have come since September. Even when I compare this field trip to the one from the fall. Their bonds with their friends are so much stronger. They are more outgoing. Their personalities continue to be so different from one another. There were 2 rules on the farm. Stay on the path and listen to your farm teacher. Lexi, the rule follower, did just that and reminded others when they forgot. Kenzie, my free spirit, was often wandering off the path, to run her hand along the fence, to pick a wildflower, not out of ill will but just because her mind was drifting. Oh so different but oh so lovely in their own ways. Watching them hold hands with their classmates, skipping along in rainboots, made my heart happy. I am so blessed to be their mom!
When we were done some of the kids on the street had set up a lemonade stand and so we walked down to say hello and to purchase some lemonade. Suddenly an impromptu happy hour sprung up and we were offered beer, the girls pizza and cookies, and we enjoyed a wonderful evening with some of our future neighbors. I love this and am so excited that we are moving from one friendly street to another. I think we are going to be very happy in our new home.

It was the start of a gorgeous weekend! The next morning Randall went for a bike and the girls and I went "shopping" with the girls at the Herschell Woods Lane street sale. They insisted on bringing their shopping carts and hit the jackpot at Eliza's house where they aquired some play food, a doll suitcase, a play hair styling set, a Care Bears movie and some stamps and ink pads. They had blast selecting their merchandise. On our way back to the house Kenzie spotted a guitar from across the street and insisted on purchasing it. It is missing some strings but it was definitely her favorite purchase of the day. After our shopping adventure we went to meet daddy in Hyde Park Square (aka "the farmers market" by the girls) where he completed his bike ride. The girls were so happy to run around the square in the sunshine. So happy that it finally felt like Spring!

The next day was another gorgeous day, but unfortunately I had to depart for Geneva mid-day. We spent the morning playing outside and when Daddy said the girls could accompany him to drop me off at the airport, they rushed and got their princess suitcases and set them by the car. Luckily they weren't too disappointed when they realized that they weren't actually getting on the plane with me, but they did insist on taking their suitcases in to Nordstrom when Daddy took them there for lunch after the drop off :)
I had a good work week in Geneva, but I always miss my girls (and Randall) so much while I am away. My flight home on Thursday was cancelled, so by the time I finally made it home on Friday evening I could not wait to see them. I could not have asked for a better welcome from my ladies! They had made a big welcome home banner and the smiles on their faces could not have been bigger. There is no better feeling in the world than to have my two little loves sprinting towards me as I pass through security. It felt so good to be home!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10647569601558391769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1592346092188899149.post-20608012318135915712013-04-23T06:02:00.000-07:002013-04-23T06:02:03.472-07:00{go reds! opening day & our first game of the season}The girls came home from school one day during that last week of March saying, "The day after Easter and Daddy's birthday there will be a parade. And we will cheer "Go Reds!" and it will be SOOOO fun!" Apparently they had talked about opening day at school and they were very excited!

So on the day after Easter and Daddy's birthday the plan was for Sara to bring the girls downtown for the parade and for Randall and me to meet them for lunch. That Monday morning was freezing cold and at one point mid-morning it even started snowing. Sara debated not coming as she was afraid the girls would just be old and cranky, but they were insistent, they wanted to go to the Reds parade!

So they came downtown and I met them for lunch on fountain square. It was packed. I realized that I had actually never before come down to the parade and had only watched portions of it out my office window. I was amazed at how many people were out and how festive the atmosphere was despite the cold. The girls complained a bit about the cold but they were excited once the parade started. They enjoyed it until Mr. Red Legs came over to tell them hello. Then Kenzie nearly crawled out the back of her stroller trying to escape his reach. She was terrified of this larger than life "boy" and said she wanted to go home. She was worried that the "boy with the baseball head" was going to come back. I was afraid that this experience might have traumatized her for the duration of the baseball season, but she recovered quickly and by them time I got home from work that evening she said, "Mom, you know that boy with the baseball head, I know his name. It's Mr. Red Legs and the lady is Rosie. Mom, I wasn't scared of him, my baby was scared."
"Oh, ok," I answered. "So you still want to go to a Reds game"
"Yes, Mom! We do," they replied.

And so that weekend we went to our first Reds game of the season. The girls were so excited! When we arrived at the stadium they were excited just to play with the baseball player statues outside of the ballpark. When we got inside they wanted to go straight to the play area. So we let them play and had lunch before actually finding our seats. The girls were mesmerized by all of the sights and sounds. They enjoyed the music as each player came up to bat, loved cracking open peanuts and throwing the shells on the ground. They were so excited that they could see the river and the boats from our seats and thought eating ice cream out of a baseball cap bowl was about the coolest thing ever. ANd halfway through the game Lexi exclaimed," look Mommy! There are mens playing a game down there!" With all of the other distractions and excitement it was only then that she realized that there was actually a baseball game in progress. Too cute!

I think it is safe to say that they enjoyed their first game of the season. They weren't even scared of the fireworks that followed the home run because they remembered them from last year. And while the Reds didn't win this one (our future neighbor who is the Nationals pitcher actually came in and ended up winning it for the Nationals) it was a fun day and we will certainly be back at the ballpark for more fun this season!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10647569601558391769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1592346092188899149.post-35126888629579467362013-04-17T20:04:00.002-07:002013-04-17T20:04:44.871-07:00{well if you mustache, randall is 40}On March 31st we celebrated Randall's 40th birthday and Easter!

Randall's birthday festivities kicked off on Thursday with a celebration at the office. His admin had decorated the entire floor with pictures and signs. It was really cute! We had Friday off since it was Good Friday. Sara stayed with the girls and Randall and I spent the entire day together. We made some house selections in the morning, had a delicious lunch at a new restaurant and then checked into the new 21C hotel downtown. We enjoyed fabulous massages and an afternoon of relaxation.

I then surprised Randall with a night of celebration with some of our closest friends. We met for pre-dinner drinks, enjoyed dinner at Metropole and continued the party into the wee hours. It was such a fun night.

The next morning we slept in until 10AM!!! (that has happened in 3 years ... and was only after we both initially woke up before 7AM, but still.), enjoyed a yummy brunch at Nada, and toured the 21C galleries before heading home to our girls.

Sara and the girls surprised daddy with some handmade gifts and cookies for his birthday. They were so excited! So sweet!

The next morning was Easter morning. The Easter Bunny visited and brought the girls and the birthday boy some goodies. We went to church and then to brunch at Cumin. It was a rainy Easter morning, but happily the sun emerged while the girls were napping so they were able to do an easter egg hunt in the afternoon. They had a blast running around finding eggs and asked us to hide them over and over again :)

We continued celebrating Randall throughout the day with cake and dinner out. It was a great day of celebration. Happy 40th Birthday to my fabulous husband! You deserve to be celebrated!

Here's a recap of the past month in many pictures and few words.

We have been monitoring progress on the house on a nearly daily basis.

The girls had a blast celebrating Super Ry's 4th birthday at Ault Park. Pint sized super heroes are the best.

The highlight of the week was the fact that they broke ground on our new house. The permits were finally approved by the city, Duke Energy got over to disconnect the gas from the old house 2 whole days before their deadline, the excavator showed up, and the old house came down a day earlier than planned ... and the girls napped through the whole thing. They had been so excited to watch the old house "get knocked over." I had asked our builder to let us know when it was going to take place and he said Thursday. On Wednesday afternoon at 2:30pm I got an email and voicemail from our builder, "He started knocking it down. Can you get here quick?" I let Sara know, but by the time she took the girls pver after their nap he was already done. They were still excited, but it was a bit anti-climactic for them. When I got home from work they told me, "Mom, they knocked down the old house, but they didn't build our new house." Wouldn't it be nice if it could go up as quickly as it came down? Even though the tear down was a bit ant-climactic, the girls love going to the building site and insist on doing it at least once a day. The site has become the local playground for the boys on the street and we have already met many nice neighbors. On Saturday night the builder (who lives on the street) had a bonfire on the lot - I have a feeling we are really going to like our new street and neighbors. GiGi sent the girls a book called "Building a House" which we have read no less than 100 times already. It is so cute to see how interested and excited the girls are about the buidling process. Let's hope they maintain this excitement for the next 8 months. Tobi has been staying with a friend/coworker the past few weeks and when he came home this weekend the girls were insistent about taking him to the lot because "Tobi hasn't seen our new house yet!"
In other ground breaking news from this past week, the girls had their first dentist appointment last Wednesday. They were both pretty excited about it in the days leading up to the appointment because we had been talking about it and Sara checked out some books from the library about going to the dentist. However, the morning of Kenzie started to get nervous as she does in any new situation and said she didn't want to go. So Lexi volunteered to go first. She was very brave and confident, until she actually laid flat on the exam table and the dentist put her hands in her mouth - then she lost it and said she wanted to go home NOW! I managed to calm her down and she finished the exam and even let them take an x-ray of her front tooth without any issues. Kenzie followed and was very brave - no tears. No cavities and Lexi's tooth which has turned gray still has the nerve intact so the dentist is not concerned. It probably got "bruised" this summer when she tripped and fell in our neighbors driveway and hit her mouth. She said the bruise may actually fade and the tooth could turn white again, or it may stay discolored. Happy that at least it doesn't pose any bigger problems.

She woke up on Monday morning feeling fine and wanted to go to school. We said goodbye to Aunt Inken & cousin Grady and Omi K accompanied them to drop-off at school. They were excited to celebrate their birthday at preschool on Tuesday. I came in for cupcakes and read a story to the class. It was fun to watch them in their element.

GiGi stayed in Cincinnati all week because on Wednesday morning I had to fly to Minneapolis and Randall was in China all week. The girls were good for Sara and GiGi while I was in "Mini Apple" - as they called it. On Friday when I was back we took the girls to Nordstrom Cafe upon their request. We left with 4 pairs of new shoes and 2 new dresses for the girls - quite an expensive dinner :) The girls love the new light up "twinkle toes" shoes that GiGi bought them!

Saturday was a beautiful day filled with sunshine. Unfortunately GiGi came down with the stomach bug in the middle of the night so she was pretty much out of commission. I took the girls to Target to exchange a birthday gift, and Kenzie decided on a scooter while Lexi picked a Belle baby doll and Minnie Mouse dress up dress (she swore she did NOT want a scooter, but as soon as we got home and she saw Kenzie using it she changed her mind and also wanted a scooter - of course... should have seen that one coming.) The girls and I spent the rest of the day outside. We met up with friends at the park, played soccer in the back yard and Kenzie and George went for a spin in the Mini Cooper.
After nap it was time to go pick up Daddy at the airport. To say the girls were excited is an understatement. They built quite the fan club as we waited for Daddy to arrive and watching them reunite was priceless. We decided to stop in Over the Rhine for an early dinner on our way home from the airport. Even at 5:15pm it was packed and we ended up waiting for a table at A Tavola. The food was yummy as always and it was so nice for the 4 of us to be together again.

GiGi woke up feeling better - or at least good enough to venture out for brunch - so we headed to The Echo. We stopped at Target on the way there to pick up a scooter for Lexi - yes, we caved - and the girls rode their new scooters in Hyde Park Square while we waited for a table. It was a glorious day - we scootered all the way up to Ault Park - which was filled to the brim with everyone who had been hibernating all winter and was now anxious to soak up some Vitamin D. On the way home the girls ran into a preschool classmate and then the Krause's who were playing baseball in their front yard so it was a nice leisurely trip home from the park.

We topped off the weekend by grilling burgers and asparagus and eating dinner outside. Hard to believe that we got 4 inches of snow on Wednesday and were eating dinner outside in short sleeves on Sunday. Too bad the sunshine and warm temps didn't last long. We were back down to the 20's and snow flurries a couple of days later ... and with that blast of cold Kenzie inherited the stomach sickies ... which thankfully once again were short lived. We are ready for spring ... for consistently warmer temps, sunshine and no sickies!

Lexi woke up at 6am screaming, "Mommy, I got sick. Mommy, I threw up in my bed!" Not the way anyone wants to wake up on their birthday. My poor baby was so sad to be sick on her birthday. "But mommy, today is my party and I need to eat cake," she said.

She got sick a couple more times. I called the doctor and debated what we should do. In the end I decided there was no way I would be able to contact everyone to postpone the party on such short notice and there was no way that I could deny Lexi her party which she had been talking about for 2 months leading up to this day.

So Inken, Sara and I went to Ozo Play Cafe and set up Kenzie & Lexi Carnival Birthday Bash and I prayed that my little Lexi would feel better and be able to enjoy it.

The girls were so excited when they showed up at their party. Kenzie was running around, greeting her friends with big hugs, beaming. And while Lexi certainly was not quite herself she was a trooper and I am glad that she was able to experience her 3rd birthday party. While I knew she wasn't feeling good and refused to eat any lunch or snacks, she insisted on chocolate cake. We sang happy birthday and they both had their cake. It was official, they were now three!

The cake did come back up in our driveway when we got home, but that's not what she remembers. She remembers who was at her party. They both talk about who was there and the cake and the games. So I think it is safe to say that they enjoyed it.

Kenzie & Lexi turned three on 3.3.2013! I love this picture from their birthday eve breakfast (we celebrated early since Randall had to leave to go on a business trip to China on Saturday). It captures them perfectly. Equal parts princess and tomboy. Oh how I love my little three year olds!

And I love that everyone who was here to welcome them into the world three years ago was here again to celebrate their 3rd birthday. GiGi and PopPop drove up from New Orleans and Omi K, Inken and Grady flew in from San Francisco. My little ladies were surrounded by love on their birth day and on this birthday weekend. They are such lucky girls and I am such a lucky mommy.

Birthdays are a big deal to me. I want my girls to feel special on their special day. And I tend to get a bit nostalgic on their special day. Their birthday is more important to me than my own, because it is the day I became a momma to not one, but two magical girls. It was a day that changed my life forever and I love celebrating the anniversary of that day. I realized that I have succeeded in making K&L realize that their birthday is a big deal, when on the Tuesday before their birthday they were running circles in their bedroom at bedtime chanting, “I’m excited for my birthday! I’m excited for my birthday!”

We had such a fun weekend. Everyone arrived by Thursday evening so the festivities started on Friday. On Friday morning we all accompanied the girls to soccer. They were very excited to show off their skills and Grady enjoyed running around the soccer field with them. Then the girls went to see Mark for their birthday haircuts. On Friday evening we celebrated with Daddy at El Jinete (which has become somewhat of a birthday tradition).

On Saturday morning we had french toast with candles. The girls then got to open their gifts from mommy & daddy and some of the other family gifts. The cousin got right to play in their new kitchen and grocery store. Their last birthday surprise right before daddy left for the airport was a little Mini Cooper electric car. Their reaction when we brought it out in the snow was priceless. They both sprinted to the car and hopped right in. Kenzie was in the driver seat and had no fear, but Lexi was a bit unsure when the car started moving. Grady thought it was pretty cool :)

When daddy left for the airport, the girls and I went to celebrate Skylar's 1st birthday. It was a wonderful party to celebrate a beautiful little girl whom the girls both love. They had such a great time celebrating with "baby Skylar!"

The fun continued on Saturday afternoon as the cousins played and later that evening with dinner at Nordstrom Cafe. The girls went to bed happy on Saturday night. As I was tucking them in Lexi asked me, "Mom, am I three now?" With so much celebration it certainly felt like her birthday had been going on for 2 days already. "No honey, not yet. You will be three tomorrow." I reassured her. "Oh good. Cause I didn't have my cake," she responded. "I love you to the moon & back. Tomorrow we will have cake and you will be three," I smiled as I kissed them goodnight.

I can't believe how quickly February flew by.

We celebrated Huey's 3rd birthday, went for walks to the park in the crisp winter air, warmed up indoors at Ozo Play Cafe, and even squeezed in a date night.

We said farewell to really great friends. It wasn't goodbye, but rather "see you real soon on the West Coast." Miss them already so it won't be too long before we are anxious to visit them in their new home. We went out to eat with our babies (& they with their babies). They are quite the little mommies these days and their babies (plus carseat, plus diaper bag, plus blanket) accompany them everywhere... up to bed, down for breakfast, out to lunch, up for nap ... you get the idea.

The girls also had their first tennis lesson, with friends George & Skylar. Their Uncle Mario was a fabulous (& very patient) instructor and the girls loved it! They actually followed instructions very well. They have been talking about playing tennis ever since!

GiGi & PopPop arrived in town on February 27th in advance of the big 3rd birthday festivities and we wrapped February up with PopPop's 70th birthday celebration on February 28th! The girls were very excited to be able to celebrate with PopPop!

So far 2013 has been a whirlwind. How is it already mid February? Between the move, busy times at work, and two crazy almost 3 year olds things have been pretty stressful. Thankfully those 2 crazy almost 3 year olds are also there to provide a good dose of comic relief on a daily basis. While they can test my patience at times, they truly brighten each and every day. I mean, how can you not smile when you look at the pictures above? Pure carefree joy!

Between all of the crazy times we did squeeze in some fun ... celebrating Hayden's 3rd birthday, an always fun visit with the Schlegels, book club holiday party, lots of indoor fun including running off some steam at the sports club, baking, "camping" at REI, playing with play dough, practicing letters, playing and watching soccer ...

The girls had movie night at school and it was so fun to watch them interact with all of their little friends. I don't think they watched a minute of the movie :) The girls were troopers during the move itself and have settled in very nicely at "our new" house. They got new big girl beds and have been sleeping in their own beds every night since we moved in. Woohoo!

I am so grateful to the deLacy's for sharing their beautiful home with us. It truly has helped to make this transition period so much easier! Life is busy but good. I want to capture my emotions about moving out of our first true family home ... but will need to do that in another post when I have more time.

The girls started soccer last Friday. They were very excited. I think mostly driven by the fact that they got to get new "exercise clothes like mommy's." I was not able to accompany them to their first class since it is on Friday morning at 10:30am, but Sara captured some good pictures and the girls have given me the rundown.

They had fun. They learned "no sneaky hands!" They like Coach Scott. They got to run and kick the ball. Their friend Sam from Gymastics is in their class. They wanted to practice in the yard with Daddy.

It has been fun listening in on their conversations this week as they often bring their soccer drills into their play. I have overheard them saying, "Now you chase me sissy and then I blow the whistle and I chase you." " Kick the ball into the doghouse (apparently this is a term they used - perhaps to teach them to conecpt of the goal." "No sneaky hands!"

They may still get confused about whether they are playing soccer or basketball or football ... but they definitely seem to have picked up some things in their first class and are enjoying it. Let's see how the rest of the "season" goes and if we have the next Mia Hamm on our hands :)

The girls love a good party. Just don't tell Kenzie about it too far in advance because as soon as she knows about an upcoming party she wants to go "NOW!" This past weekend the girls were lucky enough to get to go to two different parties.

We went to a football party on Saturday night to watch the Bengals (lose) in their playoff game. The girls had such a great time playing with all of the other kids. We then dropped them off at home with a babysitter and got to back to the same street, different house (progressive football party) to watch the second game. It was a perfect evening; fun with the kids, followed by some fun with adults only.

The next morning we were invited to celebrate Brooke's 6th birthday with their extended family. Brooke has become such a beautiful, kind and considerate girl and I can hardly believe that she is already 6 years old. The girls adore her (and Gavin) and look up to their older friend. It was a great morning with great friends ... but a bit bittersweet as we had to say goodbye to Kevin as he was leaving for California the next morning.

The girls have also started talking about their upcoming 3rd birthday party already. Lexi is especially into it. She keeps telling me that she wants to have "all of her friends there" and then starts rattling them all off ... I hope she is not disappointed if not everyone is able to make it. She is also very concerned about where we are going to have her party, since we will be moving before March. I keep assuring her that she doesn't need to worry, and that her friends will be able to find the party even though it won't be at our current house.

Oh how I love my little party girls!
We rang in the new year at home with some of our good neighbor friends. It was a perfect low key evening. We also spent most of new years day at home relaxing and enjoying time together as a family before having to head back to work tomorrow. Randall and the girls prepared black eyed peas & cabbage this evening to bring us luck in 2013! Here's hoping that it's a good year!

When we made it home on Friday evening after nearly 12 hours of travel the girls were so excited that it was snowing. They were even more excited when we woke up on Saturday morning to about 4 inches of snow.

We got bundled up and hurried outside to build a snowman. The girls only lasted about 15 minutes before they were complaining that they were cold so they took a break and watched Daddy build the snowman from the comforts of the living room. They did head back outside to help with the finishing touches and were quite excited about their completed "frosty."

We spent the rest of the weekend indoors. We took a trip to Nordstrom and the girls insisted on taking their new bitty twins in their strollers. The girls had fun playing with their other Christmas gifts as well this weekend. Lexi has been a mommy's girl the last few days. She does not want to leave my side and would prefer to be holding my hand at all times. Not sure what is causing this new attachment. Randall went to the Bengals game on Sunday and the girls and I had a date at the ice cream parlor.

On Sunday evening we got together with the Stealey's to celebrate Christmas. It has been way too long since we have all gotten together and we had such a great time. The kids all played so nicely together and we enjoyed a fabulous meal prepared by our wonderful friends. Oh how I will miss them when they move to California.

We had a wonderful time celebrating Christmas in California with my family. We spent the first half of our trip in Healdsburg and then returned to Inken & Andrew's for Christmas. Now I'm not going to lie, it was quite a different experience than our last trip to wine country, as in more crying and less relaxing. There were some challenging moments dealing with jet lag and 3 kiddos under the age of 3 who all wanted to play with THE new toy. However, there were also those wonderful moments when three cousins were chasing one another around the house in fits of giggles, or giving loving kisses, or having "conversations" over breakfast, or reading books with their Omi K.
A recap of our trip in many pictures and few words.

The girls were great little travelers (despite Kenzie getting carsick on the way to the airport for our 7am flight). They were so excited to see their cousin Grady. When you ask Lexi what the best part of her trip to California was the answer is always "Grady!"

We had lots of rain, but made the most of the times that the sun was out and found fun things to do in the rain ... like playing twister & candy land while enjoying some wine.
We rented a limo to take us wine tasting one day. A very good decision as the kids thought the limo was very cool and it made the day much more enjoyable for the adults.
The girls enjoyed our Healdsburg "neighbors" but weren't quite as impressed with our visit to Muir Woods. The enormity and beauty of the redwoods did not seem to overcome the fact that they were cold and tired.
We continued our family tradition of having Cioppino for Christmas Eve dinner, quite appropriate for San Francisco. Kenzie baked cookies for Santa wit Aunt Inken ... Lexi was beyond exhausted and cranky and was already in bed ... and requested that we put out 8 carrots for the reindeer and a Diet Coke for Santa.
Christmas morning was fun and a bit chaotic. Santa found us in San Francisco and brought the "pink princess" that Lexi had been wishing for.
It was a fun & busy week spent with those that I love the most. I am so thankful for my family and the opportunity to share new experiences with my girls. And while we returned home exhausted, we also returned with wonderful memories and that makes it all worthwhile. It was a very merry California Christmas.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10647569601558391769noreply@blogger.com1
